Robert Tillson, a wealthy Quincy, Illinois merchant, and his wife Charlotte, had at least five children. Their son William H. was mustered in as a private in Company E, 84th Illinois Infantry on September 1, 1862. He was wounded and captured at the Battle of Chickamauga in September 1863, and spent some months as a prisoner of war in Virginia until he was paroled, and then discharged April 29, 1864. From Quincy, Illinois served as state senator, 1836-1841 and state representative, 1842-1843, delegate to the anti-Nebraska convention in Bloomington, Ill. in 1856 and to the Republican National Convention in 1860, appointed to the U.S. Senate to fill Stephen A.
